If you haven’t experienced BSR yet, you’re probably wondering what happens in a typical consultation. Of course, there’s no such thing as ‘typical’, as stress affects us all differently. The Process During your first session, your practitioner takes a detailed case history, asking about any past accidents, illnesses or periods of stress. After the fact-finding, gentle tests are carried out on different parts of your body to identify which muscles and other structures are ‘stressed’. By observing muscular responses, your practitioner locates stress sites in your body and begins to release the tension by hand using light but precise pressure. Feedback and advice is always given, and clients are advised to return for two further appointments. If your stress has been stored for a long time, you may need more sessions. But you should certainly start to feel some positive changes after your first few sessions. Zzzzzz And finally, you’ll be pleased to know that you remain fully clothed throughout the session (which usually lasts around 45 minutes). The technique is non-invasive and is so gentle that you might even begin to find yourself drifting off. Not a bad way to spend a break from your usual routine! Every day we are exposed to different types of stress: physical, emotional and even chemical (from food or air pollutants, for instance). Although a little stress can be ‘good’ for you, when your body is overloaded with stress it struggles to adapt and the tension can become stored in physical structures like muscle. This is called ‘body stress’. Listen to your body The obvious signs of body stress are pain, stiffness, numbness and postural distortion. Other clues are general fatigue and a lack of energy and zest for life. Over time these symptoms often worsen but, with nothing obvious to blame them on, we often tolerate our suffering in silence or begin to accept them as normal. ‘I’m getting older, what else should I expect?’ ‘A decent sleep should sort me out.’ ‘It’s not life-threatening.’ ‘I don’t have time to worry about this.’ Sound familiar? Your body is amazing! Our bodies have a natural predisposition to exist without stress. A healthy body will do its best to eliminate the effects of stressors. But a build-up of stored tension can throw our natural defence mechanisms off kilter, and our built-in self-healing mechanisms don’t function as well as they could. And this is where Body Stress Release can help. Once your body is manually stimulated to encourage it to unravel or ‘release’ the stored tension, it is able to continue its clever self-maintenance. If you are feeling below par and think your body could be storing too much stress, BSR may be just the thing for you.
